When the snow begins to melt and the trees regain their leaves, you know it’s the perfect time to mountain bike in Vermont. Miles of winding trails await, and varying terrain gives both beginner cyclists and experienced riders the chance to glide through the mountainside. Vermont’s mountain bike trails are surrounded by rolling hills, historic farms, and peaceful pastures and are punctuated by pristine streams and lakes, offering an ideal backdrop while pedaling. With so much to see, the number of routes and loops in the Green Mountain State is almost endless! Here are some of our favorite Vermont mountain biking places to ride.

Vermont Mountain Bike Park

With over 45 miles of bike trails, Killington Resort is an ideal destination for mountain biking in Vermont. The Bike Park’s trail system includes natural and man-made features that will challenge more experienced cyclists, and first-time riders can get their wheels turning with a lesson and guided tour. The resort’s tour guides have over 20 years of experience and will even plan a 2-hour adventure for you, complete with trail and lift access. Reservations for guided mountain bike tours are recommended, so be sure to call ahead!

Green Mountain Trails

Just 8 miles north of Killington, Green Mountain Trails is a multiuse network of trails that travel over varied terrain in Pittsfield and Stockbridge, VT. Here, cyclists can enjoy 25 miles of trails that climb 1,000 feet and feature flowing mountain streams, overlooks, and stunning panoramas of the mountains. Many of the trails are relatively smooth, but there are several miles of rocky singletrack that will challenge riders. The entire trail system is free to the public, so you can enjoy a fun-filled day no matter which route you choose.

Other Great Places to Bike in Vermont

  • Pine Hill Park: Just 25 minutes from Killington, Pine Hill Park in Rutland, VT, offers a 16-mile singletrack system that winds through 300 acres. Be sure to check trail conditions before you head out, as many of the routes are fragile and don’t open until the ground is ready.
  • Killington Pico Cycling Club: This recreational/racing club welcomes cyclists of all ages and abilities and offers club rides and events each week, from April to October. Their mission is to promote road and mountain bicycling for sport, recreation, health, and friendship and provide information o­n safety, proper bike maintenance, and competency in riding.
