Vermont residents are passionate about land conservation and environmentalism. Nowhere is that more apparent than The Marsh-Billings-Rockefeller National Park, just outside of Woodstock, VT. It opened in 1998 and was the first national park in Vermont. While the name may be a mouthful, the park’s importance cannot be overstated. The park pays tribute to local conservationists and environmentalists who dedicated much of their time to protecting our beautiful land. Today, visitors can learn about this history as they explore the grounds, the famous mansion, the carriage house, and many other incredible sites at Marsh-Billings-Rockefeller National Park.

The History of Marsh-Billings-Rockefeller National Park

The park is named for its former owners, George Perkins Marsh, Frederick Billings, and the Rockefeller family. George Perkins Marsh was an environmentalist who grew up on the property. Frederick Billings was an early conservationist who established a progressive dairy farm and professionally managed forest on the former Marsh land. His granddaughter, Mary French Rockefeller, was married to Laurance S. Rockefeller, and both were conservationists who sustained the tradition of mindful farming and forestry on the property.

The Marsh-Billings-Rockefeller State Historic Park is a testament to the passion and drive many Vermont residents have towards conservation. This drive can still be seen today, as park staff educate visitors on the history of the area as well as what the guests can do to aid conservation efforts.
