Wellwood Orchards is a beautiful family-owned farm in Springfield, Vermont, that produces a wide variety of fruit including strawberries, apples, pumpkins, and more. In addition to acres of fruit trees and stunning views of the Green Mountains, the orchard offers free tractor-pulled wagon rides from Labor Day through Columbus Day and even has a petting zoo full of bunnies, baby cows, goats, chickens, pheasants, and peacocks. The next time you stay with GetAway Vacations, grab the kids and take a fun family trip to Wellwood Orchards! Here are some of our favorite things to do and see there.

Spend an Afternoon at Wellwood Orchards

Pick Your Own Fruit

There’s nothing like the taste of fresh-picked fruit, and Wellwood Orchards produces many delicious varieties throughout the year. Juicy strawberries, cherries, raspberries, blueberries, plums, peaches, and nectarines are available in the summer, and crisp apples, pumpkins, squash, and gourds can be found in the fall. Guests can choose to pick their own produce when it’s available or stop by the Wellwood Orchards country store for bags of already-picked fruit. The store also offers a variety of locally-made goods including maple syrup and honey, delicious Vermont cheese, fresh-baked pies and donuts, and even fresh-pressed apple cider.

Visit the Strawberry Festival

Perfect for a day out with the kids, the Wellwood Orchards Strawberry Festival takes place each June and features food and craft vendors, wagon rides, live music, and pick-your-own strawberries. Feel free to bring a lawn chair or blanket and relax while the kids romp in the straw bale play area, then enjoy a delicious picnic with food, drinks, and tons of fresh strawberries right from the fields.

Enjoy Apple Picking Season

Once summer ends and the strawberries are gone, it’s all about apples at Wellwood Orchards. Guests can visit the farm and pick classic varieties like McIntosh, Honeycrisp, Red Delicious, and Golden Delicious apples, or try some unique flavors like the Strawberry Apple, Ginger Gold, Northern Spy, Empire, or Baldwin. The orchard is open 7 days a week during apple season and visiting hours are 9 AM to 5 PM.

Other Great Places to Explore

While you’re out and about in Vermont, be sure to stop by Poverty Lane Orchards, just a half hour north of Wellwood in Lebanon, New Hampshire. This unique farm grows everything from raspberries and currants to cherries and apples but is most famous for their onsite cider-making facility, Farnum Hill Ciders. The hard apple cider is 6.5-7.5% alcohol and is dry, fruity, and beautifully aromatic. It’s the perfect addition to any fall getaway in New England!
