Abraham Lincoln is one of the most influential and well-regarded presidents in our country’s history. President Lincoln and wife Mary Todd Lincoln had four children, only one of whom, Robert, survived to adulthood. Son Robert and his wife Mary built Hildene in Manchester as a summer home at the start of the 20th century; three generations of Lincoln’s lived at Hildene over the course of 70 years. The Lincoln Family Home, the 412 acres of diverse landscape that it sits on, 12 miles of walking/ski trails, a restored Pullman rail car “Sunbeam”, and operating public agricultural operations, are open for touring.
A Variety of Tours
Take a self-guided tour of Hildene mansion year-round, choose a guided tour (*offered 11 months of the year) to learn intriguing insights from a House docent, and consider adding a Behind the Scenes Tour for a sneak peak into the archives and collection rooms. Bring a lunch (or pick up some Hildene-, local- and Vermont-made delicacies from The Museum Store to picnic with on grounds) and you’ll find it easy to spend the whole day. View the cheesemaking operation at the Goat Dairy; visit the farm animals, 1832 Hollow schoolhouse, 600 foot floating boardwalk and state-of-the-art greenhouse at Dene Farm; engage with the Many Voices exhibit at the historic rail car Sunbeam, a stop on Vermont’s African American Heritage Trail; wander through formal, cutting and kitchen gardens; and put on those hiking shoes to take advantage of an extensive trail system leading you from one venue to the next.
Winter Fun
The winter season offers a different kind of Hildene experience, with cross country ski and snowshoe rentals available on site. Each corner of the property offers an engaging experience year-round for those who love the outdoors.
