You may never want to leave your vacation hideaway, but in case you do, Killington offers some great attractions. In addition to skiing and snowboarding, the area offers restaurants, shopping and bars with live music. From adventuring down forest trails to exploring the picturesque mountainside streets of town, there’s plenty to enjoy during the holiday season.
In the fall, you can attend the Halloween Parade in Rutland, pick apples at Mendon Mountain Orchards, or find your way through a corn maze Hathaway Farm and Corn Maze, a historic, three-generations old Vermont working farm. They even sell maple syrup, and you might want to take a bottle home with you, along with a pumpkin for freshly made pumpkin pancakes! Even better, the pumpkin can double as a Jack-O-Lantern for either Halloween week, or for homemade pumpkin pie for Thanksgiving! It’s the perfect fall-colored backdrop for snapping beautiful family photos of unforgettable memories.
Fall is also terrific time to take the family on a magical horseback trail ride through the vibrantly colored forest, from a nearby local stable such as Pond Hill Ranch or Otter Creek Stables. Follow up a delicious homecooked Thanksgiving meal with a short walk with scenic views and return to your vacation home and gather around the fireplace have dessert and spend time with your loved ones. It’s a great season to pick up a jug of locally made cider too!
In the winter, you can go for a fabulous sleigh ride or snow mobile tour. At Killington Ski Resort, you can go on a Snowcat sleigh ride, where the sleigh is pulled by two Snowcat machines, and opening right before Christmas Eve, could be a perfect way to get in the festive mood! A short drive away in nearby Woodstock, you can go on an actual horse-drawn sleigh ride through the snowy woods at Kedron Valley Stables. If you’re visiting earlier in December, make the drive to take the kids to the Hartford Polar Express Train ride, where they’ll get a train ride to the north pole, a homemade cookie and a hot cocoa, and, of course get to meet Santa!
Of course, winter goes hand in hand with skiing, and although the season is just getting started, there’s plenty of trails to zip down. We have quite a few “Ski On, Ski Off” properties for both Killington Ski Resort and Pico Mountain Ski resort, a fantastic option for those who’d love to spend the holiday reveling in the beauty of the snow-covered mountains. After a day of skiing, you can always dine at one of our many superb restaurants in town and save the cooking for Christmas Day!
