Origin of the Marginal Way

The Marginal Way was created in the early 1900s by conservationist and former State Legislator, Josiah Chase. He donated this piece of land, called “the margin” because of how it was situated along the edge of Maine’s cliffs. You’ll get to know the Marginal Way’s origin story by reading the plaques and information boards along the path. Take a trip through time as you learn about the Native American tribes that inhabited the area and the early settlers who made their home in Ogunquit.

Great Views

If you happen to visit the Marginal Way during spring or summer, you’re in for a real treat. The path winds through a landscape of wildflowers, sea roses, and other botanical delights that truly add to the experience. Walk along to the soundtrack of sea breezes, waves crashing, and of course the seagulls chattering to each other from above. With several benches available along the path, you can sit and watch the lobster boats making their way out for the next great catch, and the sailboats as they glide across the shimmering waters. You can also admire the iconic Lobster Point Lighthouse. This mini lighthouse was constructed by Winfield C. Littlefield, whose family was among the first settlers in the town of Ogunquit. Even though this lighthouse is not as majestic as its many counterparts in Maine, it’s still worth a visit! This lighthouse illuminates the way for all who traverse the Marginal Way.

Walking on the Marginal Way makes you feel like you’re at the edge of the world! The paved path is easy, and accessible to all. There are only a few steep sections to look out for. You’ll for sure be able to get your steps in while admiring the spectacular view. There’s nothing like being close to the ocean, and the Marginal Way is the perfect spot to do so.
