Outdoor Activities In and Around Mendon
Mendon’s close proximity to ski resorts, golf courses and several great hiking trails means there is plenty to do year-round. Pico Mountain (one of Vermont’s most popular ski resorts) is the place to enjoy all the skiing activities you love, and Killington Resort has year-round activities for the entire family, including skiing, snowboarding, hiking, golf, and mountain biking, not to mention all the fun things to do at their Snowshed Adventure Center!
Mendon is home to Aiken State Forest, where visitors enjoy hiking, hunting, cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, and snowmobiling. The forest is also popular with dog walkers and wildlife and bird watchers. The Bald Mountain Trail is a particularly scenic trail with panoramic views of the Green Mountains, Otter Creek and Cold River valleys, and Rutland from several vista locations. It’s a typical Appalachian Mountain trail, winding up through the woods and meadows filled with blueberries and colorful wildflowers.
There are several great hiking trails beside the Bald Mountain Trail right in Mendon too.
Deer Leap Trail is an easy hike with two trails to choose from. There’s a beautiful view from the outcrop at the end of this short out-and-back trail. If you’re looking for more strenuous or difficult hikes, try the Bucklin Trail (with an elevation gain of 2,500 feet and great views), or the popular Pico Peak Trail. If you really want to test yourself, hike a portion of the Long Trail, a long-distance trail that runs through Vermont and Massachusetts.
You can hike parts of the historic Appalachian Trail too, including hikes to lovely water falls like Thundering Falls. Gifford Woods State Park offers access to the Appalachian Trail, or you can stay in the park and hike the Kent Brook Trail, a short loop trail through the hardwood forest. Many trails are used year-round by dog-walkers, mountain bikers, and cross-country skiers too. Just adjust your shoes, clothing, and equipment to match the weather and terrain.
