Fall Foliage
Vermont is legendary for its vibrant shades of oranges, yellows, reds, and browns that flash in its autumn foliage. The fall colors can be appreciated on a variety of hikes – the area has no shortage of excellent trails – or from the comfort of your own car if you prefer to do some Killington sightseeing on the move.
Scenic Drives for Killington Sightseeing
Route 100 is the backbone for any scenic drive in the Killington area, in either direction. A perfect way to immerse yourself in the splendor of autumn, the road winds through beautiful forests and over the gentle hills of the Green Mountains. Take any of the gap roads west through the mountains – Routes 125 and 17 are lovely – and spend your sightseeing trip reveling in the seasonal beauty and exploring quaint little towns. We can also recommend heading south on Route 106. Turn off on Jenne Road and you’ll find a quaint country farmhouse that is one of the most photographed in the country. You can then proceed via Route 44 to the summit road to Mt. Ascutney for stunning views of the surrounding area. The road climbs over 2,300 vertical feet in just 3.4 miles, so we recommend saving the multiple scenic turnoffs for the drive down in order to spare your weary brakes. The views here are spectacular and short hikes are popular in any season, especially during the color change. History buffs will want to seek out the nearby iconic Cornish/Windsor covered bridge, located a few miles away in Cornish, NH.
Gondola Rides
These lovely aerial rides will get you to the top of the slopes in any season, making them an excellent way to access the panoramic summit views while also providing a fun ride and great scenery along the way. The K1 Express offers 8-person enclosed gondolas and a spirited ride for 1.25 miles over the vast forests below before depositing visitors at the Peak Lodge atop Mt. Killington’s 4,241-foot summit. Soak up the world-class views and enjoy a sumptuous meal in the lodge, then explore the summit’s trails on foot or mountain bike.
